X-RAY SCANNING CAUSES FILM DAMAGE.

THIS AFFECTS EVERYBODY.

amateur photographers • professionals • moviemakers • film manufacturers

If you think this problem only affects traveling photographers, think again. Powerful CT scanners are spreading well beyond airports. Increasingly more international shipments go through modernized ports, equipped with CT scanners that can penetrate 80mm/3,14in-thick steel. Basically, the film risks severe damage even before it reaches the consumer.

Some airports push films through old X-ray scanners instead of the CT scanners. Unfortunately, this is not an adequate solution. Starting at 400ISO, film can suffer irreversible damage from any scanner.

Securing the right for hand-check at airports is only the first step.

The big goal is ensuring the safety of film at every stage of its existence.

We have to act now, before this issue grows out of our control.

Security is important. So is photographic film.

Film is totally safe and legal to take on board/transport via cargo. It can be checked for explosives or drugs without scanning. It’s way too small to hide any weapons and be of threat.

Basically, there is no insurmountable reason to X-ray it at all.

There can and should be security procedures designed, which are smooth and easy for everyone, including the airport / shipping company staff.

THE STEPS ARE

  1. Raise awareness among the policy-makers

  2. Get a legal right for hand-check first in the EU, UK and USA

  3. Push for the same legislation in the rest of the world

  4. Ensure films are exempted from scanning during shipping

WHAT CAN THE ANALOG COMMUNITY DO

• Regularly ask for hand checks, and report through the CONTACT FORM or via DM to @linabessonova.photography experiences at different airports. We will be updating our AIRPORTS page with relevant data, helping other photographers to prepare for travel.

• Subscribe to the newsletter and be ready to act (send letters to local politicians) once we have the full plan and text figured out

• Raise awareness about the issue through available social media channels (MEDIA PACKAGE) and get as many people as possible subscribing to the newsletter.
